The Cross of Hendaye is a 17th-century stone cross in the cemetery of Hendaye, in the French Basque Country. On its pedestal are striking reliefs – a sun, moon, star, and a mysterious fourfold division of a circle. In esoteric circles, the cross is seen as a “coded message” about a future world catastrophe and cosmic cycles, especially since the alchemist Fulcanelli described it in Le Mystère des Cathédrales.
Fulcanelli does not see alchemy as a chemical trick, but as a spiritual–physical process that transforms both matter and the alchemist’s own consciousness.
By working on matter and energy, the alchemist creates a kind of force-field that changes his position toward the universe and gives access to realities normally hidden by time, space, matter, and energy.
The real goal is the inner transmutation of the alchemist and the union of human and divine mind, while metal transmutation is only an outward sign. Gothic cathedrals and symbolic language are, for him, coded “stone books” that express this secret work in architecture, images, and wordplay.
