Fourteen Months in the Lfe of Mira Vos

Based on : Exploring the Unknown

J.Konstapel,Leiden,22-10-2026.

Summary of LeChat

The Letters in the Body (J. Konstapel, Constable Research, Leiden, v1.0, 21 October 2026) is a novel of approximately 260 pages followed by roughly 40 pages of appendices. It recounts fourteen months in the life of Mira Vos, a nineteen-year-old Dutch woman who feels bodily “letters” — localized tapping sensations that announce events before they occur — and who travels from the North Sea coast through the Kalahari, Japan, China, Mongolia, Sardinia, Spain, Malaysia, Micronesia, Brazil, Australia, Ireland, and Türkiye in the company of elderly masters of embodied practices, before returning home.

The book is unusual in combining three layers in a single artefact: a literary narrative, an evidentiary apparatus that documents the reality status of every practice described, and a formal model — a discrete dynamical system over a three-valued alphabet — that the appendices present as the “rules under the story.” This essay examines the book’s form (§2), its content (§3), the embedded theory (§4), and the relation of that theory to established physics (§5). An annotated reference list follows (§6). The treatment is descriptive and evaluative; where a claim is interpretive rather than factual, this is stated.

2. Form

2.1 A novel with a laboratory attached

The book’s most distinctive formal decision is the pairing of fiction with an evidentiary paratext. Appendix A, “What Is Real in This Book,” states a strict policy: every person in the story is invented; every practice described is real; every place is real except the fictional atoll of Fanaik. Each chapter receives a factual accounting under the status labels Real, Argued, Fiction, and occasionally unconfirmed. The facts were, according to the appendix, gathered by four independent searches, with two independent judges re-opening every source.

The novel’s own subject is the transmission and loss of embodied knowledge, and the appendices perform the ethical stance the narrative argues for: transparency about what is borrowed, from whom, and on what terms. Appendix F opens with the San Code of Research Ethics and the AIATSIS Code of Ethics, and the narrative deliberately withholds any real ceremony, healer, or restricted knowledge — the story shows a healing dance “only what has been described in public, from the outside.”

2.2 Narrative architecture

The twenty-seven chapters are organized in five parts — The Letters, Fire and Ink, Water, The Hold, and The Wakeful Ones — of strikingly uniform length (about nine pages each). The architecture is a quest structure in which each station contributes one practice and one principle:

PartDomainProtagonist’s phase
I. The Lettersperception (tracking, presentiments, healing dance)receiving
II. Fire and Inkmaking (tatara smelting, calligraphy, standing practice, coaxing song)ordering
III. Watercirculation (water court, whistled speech, fireflies, irrigation, wayfinding)letting flow
IV. The Holdpower and its refusal (dolphin fishing, refused instruction, crowd control, vigil, sleep)holding and letting go
V. The Wakeful Onesdeath and transmission (Göbekli Tepe, Mount Hermon, reading back, solstice light)returning

3. Content

3.1 Plot in brief

Mira’s tapping first announces a storm swell that nearly drowns her cousin Noor on the Katwijk sea-wall steps. Following her late grandmother’s annotated copy of Bleek and Lloyd’s Specimens of Bushman Folklore — specifically the passage “The Bushmen’ letters are in their bodies” — she travels to the Bleek and Lloyd archive in Cape Town, meets the San tracker Kxao in Nyae Nyae (Namibia), and thereafter accumulates a small company: Gu Lan, a calligrapher from Jingzhou; Vicent Peris, a retired judge of Valencia’s Water Tribunal; and Ikifalo, a Micronesian wayfinder. Each chapter visits a documented practice: the tatara iron smelt of Okuizumo; the stroke order of the character 道; zhan zhuang standing practice in Chenjiagou; the camel-coaxing ritual of the Gobi; the quintina of Castelsardo’s Holy Week singing; the Tribunal de las Aguas; Silbo Gomero; synchronously flashing fireflies in Malaysia; Bali’s subak irrigation; Carolinian wave-piloting; the human–dolphin fishery of Laguna, Brazil; ngangkari healing in Central Australia (refused to her); a night-time crowd evacuation in Amsterdam (effected by her, and repented); the Lough Derg vigil; a Tibetan sleep practice; Göbekli Tepe; and the winter solstice sunrise at Newgrange. Kxao dies at home as the rains arrive; Mira refuses Kell’s patronage, refunds his money, and returns to the dune where Noor — now bearing her own scar and her own anticipatory tingling — waits.

3.2 Thematic argument

The novel’s argument can be stated in three propositions.

  1. Knowledge is relational, not archival. Practices live in bodies, places, and obligations; recording them without the relations (“a canoe on a beach”) preserves the artifact and kills the knowledge. The Water Tribunal’s refusal to write down its rules is given the sharpest formulation: writing the rules would move the argument from the water to the paper.
  2. Synchrony without a leader is real. The book assembles a scientifically documented set of such phenomena (see §5.3): Huygens’s clocks, the emergence of a sung fifth voice, synchronous fireflies, human–dolphin coordination, crowd entrainment. The protagonist’s gift is treated as an extreme case of a real class, not as an exception to nature.
  3. Holding is the failure mode. The gift’s danger is not its use but its pleasure. When Mira steadies a panicked crowd and then walks them out “in step,” the mentor’s verdict — “It felt good.” / “Yes. That is the problem.” — converts the theme into a single ethical theorem: what comes together must be allowed to go round; what is held is kept awake; rest is the completion of every circuit.

The counter-figure Kell is deliberately reasonable; his facts are correct and his motives sincere. The novel’s disagreement with him is therefore not about data but about metaphysics of preservation — Mira’s closing formulation is that he was “keeping it awake.”

4. The Theory in the Book

Appendix D, “The Rules Under the Story,” presents a formal model described as “a model of the vacuum as a net of one strand, in its newest form starting from the statement that the only thing there is, is light.” Its provenance is given in Appendix F as four publications by the author (K1–K4, October 2026). The appendix is disciplined about epistemic status: every claim carries one of four labels — proved, computed, reading, open. The following summarizes the model as stated.

4.1 The unit

The fundamental length is defined from the reduced-mass Rydberg constant of hydrogen:

  • S₀ = 1/(2R_H) = 45.588 nm, with R_H = 10,967,758.34 m⁻¹;
  • T₀ = S₀/c = 1.5207 × 10⁻¹⁶ s;
  • E₀ = hc/S₀ = 27.197 eV.

Layers at depth n have length 3ⁿS₀. Three correspondences are tabulated: depth 2 gives 410.3 nm (the violet Hδ line of hydrogen); depth 5 gives 11.08 μm (near the peak of room-temperature thermal radiation); depth 31 gives 28,159 km, within 0.52% of the ideal lowest mode of the Earth–ionosphere cavity, 2πR/√2 = 28,306 km for R = 6,371 km. The appendix itself labels these “correspondences, not proof.”

4.2 The three values

A single act — “leaving a place” — takes value +1; repeated and counted modulo 3, it generates {+1, −1, 0}: one step out, its mirror (arrival), and closure. This three-element group is the alphabet of the model. The book reads the nine products of the Taiyi sheng shui (water, heaven, earth, spirits, yin-yang, seasons, cold-heat, wet-dry, year) as possibly corresponding to the nine closing three-trit windows; this correspondence is explicitly listed as open.

4.3 The dynamics

States are rings of trits. The rewrite rule is

R(t)i = −(t{i−1} + t_{i+1}) mod 3.

Results stated with proof or exhaustive computation include:

  • Of 27 length-3 windows, exactly 9 close (all equal or all different); 7 of 27 step-strings return exactly to 0, with +1+1+1 and −1−1−1 closing by going once round.
  • A ring is fixed under R exactly when every window closes.
  • Rest is rare: on a ring of length 7 there are 3⁷ = 2,187 states; exactly 3 come to rest, all others circulate with period 26 = 3³ − 1; the circulating share is 99.86%.
  • Agreement without a master: two coupled rings that read each other with weight k = 2 become identical only when their length is a power of three (200/200 runs lock at lengths 9, 27, 81; 0/200 at ten other lengths tested). The appendix gives the algebraic reason: the difference d = a − b evolves by multiplication with −x⁻¹(x − 1)² over the field of three elements, which is nilpotent exactly on rings of length 3^k. This is the formal shadow of the novel’s leaderless synchrony chapters (clocks, quintina, fireflies).
  • A held part steers more than its share: pinning a fraction h of sites to +1 leaves a steady direction D ≈ 1.15–1.3 × h. The appendix states that “a hold imposed from one side is what the story calls the wakeful ones’ fault” — and labels this a reading.
  • The past in the present shape: freezing closed windows, most of the past survives in the shape of a later state, but the exact start usually does not (only 7.7% of length-7 states have a unique past after three steps). This is dramatized twice: at Göbekli Tepe Mira cannot find “the first hand,” and in Nyae Nyae she reads a kudu’s track back until it merges with an older track. The novel’s epistemology and the model’s mathematics make the same claim.

4.4 Assessment of the appendix

As a work of self-description, Appendix D is exemplary: it distinguishes rigorously between what it proves (group-theoretic and ring-theoretic facts), what it computes (finite enumerations), what it reads into the story, and what remains open. As physics, it is not, and does not claim to be, a tested dynamical theory of nature. Its physical content is a small set of numerological correspondences (Hδ, thermal peak, Earth–ionosphere mode) anchored to a Rydberg-defined unit, plus a discrete algebra whose properties are genuine mathematics. The author’s own labeling is the appropriate defense: the model is offered as the rules under the story, not as a rival to quantum field theory. Readers approaching the book as fiction can skip Appendix D at no loss of narrative comprehension; readers approaching it as a research program will find the mathematics checkable and the physical claims modest and honestly hedged.

5. Relation to Existing Physics

5.1 Where the model touches established physics

  • The Rydberg constant and the hydrogen spectrum. The definition S₀ = 1/(2R_H) is a direct descendant of the Rydberg formula for spectral lines; the depth-2 correspondence is the Hδ line at 410.2 nm, a standard spectroscopic fact (the book’s 410.3 nm matches). The unit is thus not arbitrary; it is tied to the best-measured quantity in atomic physics. What is unorthodox is treating a length derived from hydrogen as the fundamental unit rather than as a consequence.
  • Planetary-scale resonances. The depth-31 length is compared to the circumference-derived mode 2πR/√2 ≈ 28,306 km. The standard reference here is the Schumann resonance, the Earth–ionosphere cavity modes first predicted in 1952 with a fundamental near 7.8 Hz; the book’s ideal 10.65 Hz corresponds to a different (circumference-based) mode choice. The correspondence is suggestive and, as stated, a correspondence only.
  • Thermal radiation. The 11.08 μm figure sits near the peak of the Planck distribution for room temperature (Wien: ~10 μm at 290 K). Again, correct arithmetic; the interpretive weight is in the layering 3ⁿS₀.

5.2 The mathematics

The ring dynamics R(t)i = −(t{i−1} + t_{i+1}) mod 3 is a linear cellular automaton over the finite field GF(3). The results the appendix proves — nilpotence of the coupling difference on rings of length 3^k, invertibility exactly when the length is not divisible by 4 (because x² + 1 divides xⁿ − 1 over GF(3) iff 4 | n), the period 3³ − 1 on length 7 — are theorems of a well-understood kind (linear CA over finite fields; for the general theory see Lidl & Niederreiter, and the CA literature following Wolfram’s numbering surveys). The book’s contribution here is not new mathematics but a disciplined and honest application of it, plus the mapping of its outputs onto narrative themes (rest is rare; held parts steer; the exact origin is unrecoverable). The mathematics is checkable, and the appendix says it was recomputed for the book with new code.

5.3 The synchrony literature

The novel’s central motif — coordination without a leader — is solidly grounded in the physics and applied literature, all of it cited in Appendix F:

  • Huygens, 1665. The observation of two pendulum clocks falling into antiphase “an odd kind of sympathy,” reported to the Royal Society, is the founding document; the 2002 Royal Society paper by Bennett, Schatz, Rockwood, and Wiesenfeld reproduced the effect and traced it to coupling through the common support.
  • Coupled oscillators and entrainment generally. The mathematics of synchronization is a mature field (Pikovsky, Rosenblum & Kurths; Strogatz). The novel uses it as a thematic hinge rather than deriving anything from it; the fireflies, the quintina (Castellengo, Lortat-Jacob & Léothaud measured a high “feminine” partial that vanishes when two spectral components are removed), the dance rhythm, and the crowd are all cases of entrainment with documented analogues.
  • Human–animal mutualism. The Laguna dolphin fishery is documented in the scientific literature, including a 2023 PNAS paper (Cantor, Farine & Daura-Jorge) measuring the seconds-scale timing between dolphin cue and cast, and the effect on catch rates.
  • Psychoacoustics. The quintina is an emergent percept — a “ghost partial” produced by interference among four real voices — and the book is careful to present it exactly as the researchers did: real, measurable, contingent, and not a mystical addition.

The protagonist’s bodily “letters” are, by contrast, fiction — the book’s own appendix says the storm-surge episode is invented, and the |Xam presentiment texts (Bleek & Lloyd 1911) are presented as ethnographic record, not as physics. The novel is careful to keep the two registers separate: documented synchrony on one side, the fictional gift on the other, with the appendices marking the boundary.

5.4 Where the book diverges from mainstream physics

Three divergences deserve statement in a business-like assessment.

  1. The “only thing there is, is light” ontology and the 3ⁿ-layering are speculative. No accepted physical theory takes a Rydberg-derived length as fundamental, and the correspondences listed (Hδ, thermal peak, ionospheric mode) are numerical coincidences unless or until the model generates independent, testable predictions. The appendix does not claim predictive success; it labels the landings “correspondences, not proof.”
  2. Discreteness. The trit-ring model is a finite, discrete system. Linear CA over GF(3) are well-defined mathematical objects but have no established status as descriptions of the vacuum. Mainstream physics is not incompatible with discreteness in general, but any such claim requires derivation of observed spectra, scattering, and the standard model’s symmetries — a bar the appendix does not attempt.
  3. The 364-day calendar and the balanced-ternary identity. 364 = (3⁶ − 1)/2 is an arithmetic fact; 1 Enoch’s calendar and the Qumran evidence are historical facts; the book itself states that “any link between them is a reading.” This is the correct posture.

The appropriate summary is that the book’s physics-facing material divides cleanly into (a) established science, correctly cited; (b) genuine mathematics, correctly proved or computed; and (c) speculative correspondence, explicitly labeled as such. The author has not blurred these categories — which is, given the genre, a considerable achievement.

6. Conclusions

The Letters in the Body is a controlled, morally serious novel that argues one thesis in three registers: narrative (knowledge is relational; holding is the failure mode), evidentiary (every practice cited to source, every invention labeled), and formal (a ternary model whose proved properties — rest is rare; agreement without a master; a held part steers more than its share; the exact beginning does not survive, but most of the past does — are the plot’s own theorems). Its form is its argument: the appendices do for the reader what the water court refuses to do for the farmers, and the difference between those two choices is the book’s subject.

Its weaknesses are the costs of its symmetry — episodic regularity, an unusually frictionless protagonist, an antagonist of near-providential convenience — and Appendix D will strike the professional physicist as speculative in its physical claims while unimpeachable in its self-labeling. Its strengths are a rare unity of motif and evidence, an ethical seriousness about the sources it borrows, and a mathematical appendix that behaves, as few do, like an honest laboratory notebook.
