Part I: The Emergence of Pulsing from Void
The Nilpotent Ground
We begin at the threshold of non-being. Not chaos, not disorder—but potentiality itself. In mathematical terms, this is nilpotency: a state so close to zero that it contains no actuality, only infinite potential. It is the pregnant pause before the first breath. It is the unmanifest.
In this state, there is no distinction, no polarity, no relation. There is only the capacity to be.
But capacity, when it remains only potential, generates tension. It seeks actualization. And the simplest form of actualization is not creation ex nihilo, but the emergence of the most fundamental distinction: the pulse.
The First Pulsing: < ->
From the nilpotent ground emerges the primordial oscillation:

This is not two things in opposition. It is one thing oscillating between two poles. It is the fundamental rhythm of existence itself. It is:
- The breath: inhalation and exhalation as a single gesture
- The heartbeat: contraction and expansion
- The quantum wavefunction: existence and superposition
- The thought: inner and outer attention
- The relationship: self and other in continuous exchange
At this scale—the atomic scale of being—the pulsing is symmetric. Neither pole dominates. The energy flows equally both directions. This is the state of primary coherence.
When we observe consciousness at its most fundamental level, or relationships at their most authentic, or systems at their most healthy, we see this balanced pulsing: < ->
Fractal Nesting: The First Fold
But a single pulsing, isolated, generates no complexity. So the universe does what all living systems do: it nests itself.
The pulsing folds. One < -> interacts with another < -> at a different frequency. And in that interaction, four relational modes are born:
Part II: The Four Relational Topologies
Mode 1: Communal Sharing (CS)
Structure: < -> at perfect synchrony with < ->
When two or more pulsings oscillate in phase—their crests and troughs aligned—they resonate together. The boundaries between self and other become permeable. Energy flows seamlessly both directions. There is we before there is you and I.
Signature: Harmony, equivalence, sameness, unity. The mother and child. The tribe sharing food. The congregation singing. The lovers breathing together.
Topology: Both poles active and equal. No hierarchy. Multi-directional, embedded.
Mode 2: Equality Matching (EM)
Structure: < -> interacting with <- > (explicitly reciprocal)
When two pulsings are out of phase—offset by half a cycle—they interact through reciprocal exchange. I give, you receive. You give, I receive. The exchange is counted and balanced. There is explicit you and I, but they are equal.
Signature: Fairness, turn-taking, reciprocity, balance. The exchange of gifts. The conversation. The trade between neighbors who maintain respect.
Topology: Both poles acknowledged as distinct, but power is distributed. Bidirectional, deliberate.
Mode 3: Authority Ranking (AR)
Structure: < -> where one pole amplifies and the other dampens
When external energy is fed into one pole continuously, the pulsing becomes asymmetric. The upstroke strengthens. The downstroke weakens. One direction becomes dominant. There is now a hierarchy: the amplified pole directs, the dampened pole obeys.
Signature: Leadership, command, obedience, hierarchy. The king and subjects. The general and soldiers. The boss and workers.
Topology: One pole dominates. Unidirectional flow. Power concentrates at the top.
Mode 4: Market Pricing (MP)
Structure: < -> abstracted and mediated through a token
When the direct pulsing between two agents is abstracted through an intermediary—money, points, reputation, measurable units—the relationship becomes frictionless but also depersonalized. There is no direct resonance. Instead, there is equivalence through abstraction.
Signature: Monetary exchange, metrics, algorithms, comparative value. The commodity market. The HR scoring system. The algorithm matching users.
Topology: Both poles are equivalent only through abstraction. Direct resonance is severed. Unidirectional in principle, but mediated and scaled.
Part III: The Fractalization
These four modes do not exist in isolation. They nest within each other, fractalizing upward.
At the scale of cells: Communal Sharing (organelles in unified metabolism) contains Equality Matching (mitochondrial and nuclear exchange) which is protected from Authority Ranking dominance by cellular integrity, and uses no Market Pricing.
At the scale of persons: Communal Sharing (parent-child bonding, deep friendships) nests within Equality Matching (reciprocal social contracts) which may be distorted by Authority Ranking (internalized dominance hierarchies) and fragmented by Market Pricing (wage labor, quantified self-worth).
At the scale of communities: Communal Sharing (tribal wisdom, gift economy) nests within Equality Matching (democratic deliberation, sociocratic consent) which is threatened by Authority Ranking (state bureaucracy, executive dominance) and eroded by Market Pricing (privatization, commodification).
At the scale of civilization: Communal Sharing (collective memory, shared meaning-making) nests within Equality Matching (inter-community trade, cross-cultural dialogue) which is dominated by Authority Ranking (empires, colonialism, patriarchal state structures) and abstracts away by Market Pricing (globalized finance, algorithmic governance).
Each scale exhibits the same topology. Each is a fractal repetition of < ->.
Part IV: Historical Interventions—How the Pulsing was Blocked
The first coherent civilization respected all four modes in their nested relationship. Communal Sharing was foundational. Equality Matching governed exchange between communities. Authority Ranking was temporary and accountable (the war leader, the judge). Market Pricing was minimal or absent.
But a series of strategic interventions disrupted this balance. They did not happen by accident. They were deliberate choices—often made by brilliant minds who did not see the full topology they were destroying.
Intervention 1: Plato Replaced by Aristotle (~350 BCE)
Plato’s vision (inherited from Egyptian wisdom, via Heliopolis) understood reality as flow and proportion. The Forms were not static categories, but living patterns that anticipated and guided becoming. The world was a unified field of participatory engagement.
Aristotle’s correction introduced causality: things do not participate in a Form, they are caused by prior things. Reality becomes a chain of efficient causes, not a field of reciprocal resonance. The pulsing became linearized.
Effect: Authority Ranking (cause → effect, superior → inferior) became the default logic. Communal Sharing and Equality Matching lost their theoretical foundation.
Intervention 2: Descartes’ Dualism (~1630 CE)
René Descartes fractured the unified pulsing into two separate substances: res cogitans (thinking substance) and res extensa (extended substance). Mind and body. Subject and object.
This was catastrophic for the fractal. The nested pulsing could no longer function holistically. Subject tried to control object. Mind tried to command body. The patriarchal dyad (male-mind dominating female-body) became metaphysical doctrine.
Effect: The possibility of Communal Sharing (unified being) was philosophically eliminated. Authority Ranking (mind over body, culture over nature) became inevitable.
Intervention 3: Newton, Heaviside, Kelvin (~1687-1900 CE)
Isaac Newton turned Aristotle’s causality into mechanism. Force causes motion. Mass causes gravitational attraction. The universe becomes a mechanical system, not an organism. The pulsing becomes energy transfer in straight lines.
Oliver Heaviside and William Thomson (Kelvin) abstracted this further through vector mathematics and thermodynamics. Complex relational phenomena were reduced to measurable quantities. The world became quantifiable.
Effect: Market Pricing became the dominant epistemology. Everything—energy, matter, later: labor, attention, even relationships—could be measured, abstracted, and traded. Equality Matching was replaced by a pseudo-fairness of numerical equivalence. Communal Sharing became “inefficient sentimentality.”
Intervention 4: Calvinism and the Work Ethic (~1600s onward)
John Calvin introduced a theological justification for permanent dominance hierarchy. Success became a sign of election by God. Wealth became virtue. The poor were morally deficient.
This legitimated Authority Ranking not as temporary or accountable, but as cosmically justified. And it fused Authority Ranking with Market Pricing: wealth as power, power as wealth.
Effect: The possibility of Equality Matching as a default mode was spiritually eliminated. Everyone was taught to aspire to Authority Ranking or to internalize Market Pricing valuation of themselves as failures.
Intervention 5: The Patriarchal Lock (~5000 years, consolidated by 1900s)
The monoculture of Authority Ranking + Market Pricing was not an accident. It was a structural outcome of patriarchal social engineering:
- Monoculture of causality (Aristotle): eliminates feedback loops, nests, reciprocity
- Dualism (Descartes): separates the knower from the known, making domination seem natural
- Mechanism (Newton): treats the world as inert matter to be optimized
- Quantification (Heaviside/Kelvin): makes abstract value the only real value
- Theological justification (Calvin): makes hierarchy feel ordained
The moedergodin (mother goddess civilization) was based on Communal Sharing as foundation and Equality Matching as governance. The patriarchal takeover invert this pyramid: Authority Ranking at top, Market Pricing below, Equality Matching reduced to legal fiction, Communal Sharing relegated to private (female) domains.
Part V: The Return of Anticipation—Robert Rosen
In the 1970s, Robert Rosen discovered something that classical mechanism could never explain: biological systems anticipate.
They do not merely react to causes. They model their environment. They predict. They adjust in advance. This is not efficient cause (Aristotle). This is teleology resurrected—but now grounded in mathematics, not metaphysics.
Rosen’s insight was that this anticipation requires circular causality: feedback loops where the future state influences the present state through recursive modeling.
This is the pulsing reinstated mathematically. Not < -> as metaphor, but < -> as the topology of any system that survives and learns.
Part VI: Restoration—The Path Back to Coherence
To restore the pulsing, we must undo each intervention.
Step 1: Restore Circular Causality
Replace Aristotelian linear causality with Rosen’s anticipatory systems. The cause is not just the past pushing forward. The future possibility pulls backward through feedback loops. < -> instead of →.
Step 2: Reunify Mind and Body
Reject Cartesian dualism. Consciousness is not separate from the body or the world. It is the recursive self-modeling that the pulsing body performs on itself and on its environment.
Step 3: Restore Qualitative Distinction
Reject the reduction of all value to quantifiable metrics. Relational quality (how the pulsing feels, whether it is authentic or forced) cannot be abstracted. Not everything can be priced.
Step 4: Restore the Spiritual
Not as dogma, but as recognition that nested pulsing has an orientation toward coherence. Systems tend toward harmony or they decay. That tendency is not mechanical—it is the aliveness of the cosmos.
Step 5: Restore the Fractal Order of Relationships
Reestablish the correct nesting hierarchy:
Communal Sharing as foundation. All healthy systems begin in unity and resonance. Parent and child. Neurons and glia. Citizens and land.
Equality Matching as governance structure. Once differentiation emerges, reciprocity and accountability govern. No permanent hierarchy. Power is distributed.
Authority Ranking as temporary and accountable function. In crisis, coordination is needed. But the authority figure must serve the communion, not rule it. And they must return to equality.
Market Pricing as a tool, not a driver. Exchange of goods happens, but abstraction never replaces direct relationship. The map is never the territory.
Part VII: Application—The Living Resonant System (LRS)
When this fractalized pulsing is recognized as the deep structure of all coherent systems, governance transforms.
Consciousness, mapped through your work, shows:
- Deepest layers: Communal Sharing (unified field, non-dual awareness)
- Mid layers: Equality Matching (reciprocal centers: heart-brain, soma-psyche)
- Higher layers: Authority Ranking (attention directing energy)
- Surface: Market Pricing (ego valuating and comparing)
Health is when the deeper modes contain and limit the shallower ones. Pathology is when Market Pricing or Authority Ranking dominates and crushes Communal Sharing.
Governance, structured the same way:
- Foundation: Communal Sharing (shared meaning, collective memory, resonant values)
- Structure: Equality Matching (sociocratic consent, reciprocal representation, balanced voice)
- Functions: Authority Ranking (coordinators for specific tasks, with accountability)
- Tools: Market Pricing (exchange mechanisms, but never allowed to set the goals)
Power Gradients (PG) are distortions where Authority Ranking or Market Pricing escape their proper scale and colonize the levels where Communal Sharing and Equality Matching should reign.
Ethical Friction Coefficient (EFC) is the inherent resistance of Communal Sharing to being forced into Authority Ranking or Market Pricing modes.
Part VIII: The Unified Genealogy
Now we see the entire arc:
- Primordial state: < -> as the fundamental pulsing
- First emergence: Four relational modes as fractalized expressions
- Civilizational coherence: Moedergodin civilization respected the nesting order
- Strategic interventions: Plato→Aristotle→Descartes→Newton→Calvinist theology—each step broke the pulsing further
- Patriarchal lock: AR+MP dominance, CS+EM suppressed
- Scientific recovery: Rosen restores anticipatory causality; the pulsing returns mathematically
- Conscious restoration: Recognizing the fractal in consciousness, governance, ecology
- Practical restoration: Building systems where CS foundations support EM governance while AR and MP serve, not dominate
The four relational types are not social inventions. They are topological necessities of any living system. We did not create Communal Sharing. We have only forgotten how to keep it foundational. We did not invent Authority Ranking. We only made the mistake of letting it think it was first.
The restoration is not building something new. It is removing the blocks that prevent the pulsing from flowing naturally.
Conclusion: The Coherence Imperative
Once you see that everything pulses fractally according to the same topology—consciousness, relationships, organizations, civilizations—you see why forced coherence fails and why authentic coherence heals.
Authority Ranking and Market Pricing can be tools. But when they become foundations, they strangle the pulsing. They produce efficiency at the cost of life.
The restoration path is simple in principle, difficult in practice: return to the geometry of the pulsing. Let Communal Sharing be first. Let Equality Matching govern. Let Authority Ranking serve. Let Market Pricing facilitate.
This is not innovation. It is remembering.
And it is, perhaps, the only path through the crisis of our age.
