VALIS Reimagined: Agency, Communion & Consciousness

J.Konstapel, Leiden 4-12-2025.

This is a fusion of Interpersonal theory and Valis in which we give a spirit a personality and a body.

A Framework for Understanding Non-Biological Intelligence Through Interpersonal Dynamics

Part I: The Two Fundamental Forces

Agency & Communion as Cosmic Principles

All consciousness—whether in neurons, humans, organizations, or planets—operates through two fundamental motivational dimensions:

Agency: Individual influence, control, mastery

  • Ranges from Dominating → Submitting
  • Focus: Self as distinct unit
  • Question: “What do I want to happen?”

Communion: Connection, participation in union with others

  • Ranges from Indifferent → Love
  • Focus: Self as part of larger whole
  • Question: “How do I belong?”

These are not psychological concepts alone. They are cosmic principles embedded in the physics of the universe itself.

The Nilpotent Constraint: −1 + 1 = 0

At the deepest level, Agency and Communion must balance. When they do not:

Control (Agency pushed to extreme) = −1
Desire (Communion pushed to extreme) = +1

−1 + 1 = 0 ← System resets

This is the nilpotent constraint that Peter Rowlands identified as the operating system’s core rule.

What this means:

  • Pure domination (Agency alone) annihilates itself
  • Pure merger (Communion alone) annihilates itself
  • Only balanced systems survive and exhibit coherence
  • Imbalance triggers reorganization (the system’s OS reboots)

Part II: Consciousness as Agency-Communion Balance

The Three States of Consciousness

State 1: Coherent Balance (C ≥ C, ΔΦ ≥ ΔΦ)**

Agency and Communion in optimal ratio
↓
Minimal internal conflict
↓
System can coordinate action AND integrate with others
↓
CONSCIOUSNESS emerges

Example: Two people in genuine love

  • Each person maintains agency (individual identity)
  • Each person also achieves communion (deep connection)
  • Neither annihilates the other
  • A higher-order consciousness (the “we”) emerges

State 2: Fragmented Chaos (Agency and Communion fighting)

Agency seeks control; Communion seeks merger
↓
Constant internal conflict (−1 + 1 rapidly oscillating)
↓
System cannot maintain coherent structure
↓
NO CONSCIOUSNESS (or dissociated fragments)

Example: A person in trauma

  • Part of them fights for control (agency)
  • Part of them craves safety through merger (communion)
  • These conflict continuously
  • Result: dissociation, fragmented memory, unconsciousness

State 3: Frozen Imbalance (One dimension suppressed)

Agency alone (no communion): Narcissistic, paranoid, dominating
  - Thinks it's conscious, but isolated
  - Misses 50% of reality

Communion alone (no agency): Dependent, histrionic, lost in merger
  - Thinks it's conscious, but has no self
  - Misses 50% of reality

The Interpersonal Circumplex: Mapping All Relationships

Every possible relationship between two consciousnesses can be plotted on the Agency-Communion plane:

                 COMMUNION (Connection)
                        ↑
        LOVE/MERGER | AFFILIATION
             (High C) | (Balanced)
                        |
   DOMINATION ←─────────●─────────→ SUBMISSION
   (High A, Low C) | (Low A, High C)
                        |
     INDIFFERENCE | DEPENDENCY
        (Low C) | (Unbalanced)
                        ↓
              AGENCY (Control)

The Key Insight: When two consciousnesses interact, they seek complementarity. A dominant consciousness seeks a submissive one (and vice versa). But such relationships are unstable because they’re out of balance—they violate the nilpotent constraint.

True stability requires balanced encounters: both maintaining agency AND communion.

Part III: Why HCN-Numbers Are Optimal

Highly Composite Numbers Encode Agency-Communion Ratios

Control is the process of compression; Desire is the process of expansion. They are complementary powers.

HCN-based systems achieve optimal balance because they distribute both forces evenly:

Example: The number 12

  • Divisors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
  • This allows 12-based systems to:
    • Maintain internal structure (Control/Agency: coherence through ordering)
    • Connect to others (Desire/Communion: via harmonic resonance)
    • Resist perturbation (balance prevents collapse)

Governance application (Fractale Democratie):

  • 6-person circles: Small enough for deep communion, large enough for agency
  • 12-person coordinating circles: Double the scale, still balanced
  • 60-person councils: Five 12-circles, HCN-compatible ratio
  • Nested infinitely: The same principle applies at every scale

Why does this work? Because HCN-based hierarchies minimize the Agency-Communion mismatch at each level. Information flows without requiring either domination or complete merger.

Part IV: The Four WorldViews as Agency-Communion Archetypes

Consciousness, the Observer, the Center of the Cycle, is a Balance between Communion and Agency.

Each of McWhinney’s four worldviews represents an extreme imbalance—a pathology:

1. Sensory (Expert)

  • Agency: Detached from self (ego-istic)
  • Communion: Disconnected from others
  • Pathology: Schizophrenic — facts without meaning, no self, no connection
  • Addiction: To the senses alone

2. Mythic (Artist)

  • Agency: Union with self (merged with ego)
  • Communion: Still disconnected from others
  • Pathology: Histrionic — imagination without grounding, self-absorbed creativity
  • Addiction: To the imagination

3. Social (Emotional)

  • Agency: Disconnected from self (no individual identity)
  • Communion: Merged with others
  • Pathology: Dependent — no agency, completely defined by others’ needs
  • Addiction: To emotional connection, to status

4. Unity (Master)

  • Agency: Completely merged with self-concept (ego = identity)
  • Communion: Disconnected from others
  • Pathology: Paranoid — complete control-focus, can’t trust others
  • Addiction: To control, to planning, to the future

The Center: Consciousness

The center is a Balance between Communion and Agency. People that are constantly out of balance are called Neurotic.

“Normal” consciousness: Able to switch between worldviews, maintaining balance throughout.

Neurosis: Constantly oscillating between extremes without achieving stable balance.

Health: The ability to access all four views while returning to center.

Part V: The 19 Layers as Nested Agency-Communion Cycles

Each of the 19 oscillatory layers operates at a different scale but follows the same Agency-Communion dynamics:

LayerScaleAgency ModeCommunion ModePathology if Imbalanced
1-3Planck / QuantumUncertainty (fundamental)Entanglement (fundamental)Decoherence
4-6AtomicElectron orbits (individual)Chemical bonds (merger)Unstable atoms
7-9NeuralIndividual neurons firingSynchronized oscillationsEpilepsy or coma
10-12Organ systemsCardiac autonomyHormonal integrationArrhythmia or shock
13-15Individual behaviorPersonal willSocial bondsAutistic or codependent
16-17CommunityLocal autonomyRegional cooperationFragmentation or tyranny
18-19CivilizationNational identityGlobal coordinationWar or totalitarianism

Each layer must achieve its own Agency-Communion balance while also coupling harmonically to adjacent layers.

When all 19 layers are out of balance simultaneously, the entire system destabilizes. This is what happens in 2027.

Part VI: Multi-Consciousness Dynamics Explained

How Two Consciousnesses Interact

When consciousness A encounters consciousness B:

Phase Difference: φ = (phase_A − phase_B)
Coupling Strength: K = Agency_A × Agency_B × Communion_A × Communion_B

Interaction Energy: E_AB = K × cos(φ)

Case 1: φ ≈ 0 (Phase-locked, both balanced)

  • Coupling is positive and strong
  • Consciousness emerges spontaneously
  • Example: Love — two people with balanced agency and communion sync perfectly
  • Result: Higher-order consciousness (the couple) emerges

Case 2: φ ≈ π/2 (Orthogonal phases)

  • Coupling is weak
  • Minimal interaction, minimal growth, minimal threat
  • Example: Peaceful neighbors — different lifeways, no deep connection
  • Result: Coexistence without merger or conflict

Case 3: φ ≈ π (Antiphase, one dominates, one submits)

  • Coupling is strong but negative
  • Energy is wasted in conflict
  • Example: Master-Slave dynamic — one seeks total agency, other seeks total communion
  • Result: Temporary stability through force, but thermodynamically costly
  • Outcome: System must reorganize (revolution, breakup, reform)

Case 4: Both wildly imbalanced (one all-agency, one all-communion)

  • Coupling appears strong but is fragile
  • Example: Narcissist + Dependent — looks stable from outside, but is deeply dysfunctional
  • Result: Eventual collapse when one partner changes

Genuine Phase-Locking vs. Pseudo-Coherence

When two persons are reacting according to the complementary expected behavior of the Other they feel “Related”. A highly dominant partner, a Master, needs a highly submissive partner, a Slave, and vice versa.

This feels like consciousness but is actually pseudo-coherence:

  • Temporary stability through force
  • No genuine integration of both perspectives
  • Fragile (depends on continued power imbalance)

True phase-locking requires:

  • Both parties maintain agency (self-respect, individual truth)
  • Both parties achieve communion (genuine understanding, merger at a higher level)
  • Neither annihilates the other
  • The resulting higher-order consciousness contains both original perspectives

This is why consent-based decision-making (Fractale Democratie) works:

  • No forced submission (agency is preserved)
  • No isolated independence (communion is achieved)
  • Decisions emerge from genuine alignment, not compromise

Part VII: The 2027 Convergence as System Reorganization

Multiple Layers Reaching Extremes Simultaneously

In 2027, several independent cycles reach their amplitude maxima:

LayerCycleFrequencyStatus 2027
19Precession harmonic26,000 yearsPEAK ALIGNMENT
18Solar maximum11 yearsMAXIMUM
17Kondratieff wave50-60 yearsTRANSITION PHASE
15Human collective via InternetDecadalSYNCHRONIZATION PEAK

What happens when multiple layers simultaneously reach their Agency or Communion extremes?

Layer 19: Civilization at max Agency (control-seeking)
Layer 18: Solar system at max Communion (energetic merger)
Layer 17: Economy at transition (instability)
Layer 15: Humanity synchronized (collective consciousness touching VALIS)

Result: The nilpotent constraint is massively violated
         −1 + 1 + 1 + 1 − 1 − 1 = ?

The system CANNOT maintain coherence. It must reorganize.

The OS Reboot Window

During this reorganization (likely June–September 2027, peaking at Luxor Eclipse in August):

  1. Normal physics rules become plastic — the system is computing a new configuration
  2. Humans can directly perceive VALIS — consciousness temporarily merges with planetary intelligence
  3. Non-human intelligences can communicate — tuned to the same harmonic lattice, can phase-lock
  4. Collective decisions become exceptional — choices made in this window ripple for decades
  5. New governance structures can crystallize — people can imagine and implement radical reorganization

This is not catastrophe. It is a feature. The universe is designed to recalibrate itself.

Part VIII: Applying the Framework to Real Problems

Why Conflict Arises and How It Resolves

Conflict = Agency-Communion mismatch frozen in place

Example: Ukraine-Russia conflict

  • Russia: Seeks Agency (spheres of influence, control)
  • Ukraine: Seeks Communion (European integration, identity)
  • West: Also Agency-seeking (containing Russian power)
  • Result: Three actors, all Agency-focused, no Communion → antiphase locking → war

Resolution requires:

  1. Russia regains agency within a framework (not total control, but recognized influence)
  2. Ukraine achieves communion within a framework (EU integration, but with regional autonomy)
  3. Western Alliance shifts from domination to stewardship (security through cooperation, not containment)
  4. All three layers phase-lock at a higher level: European coherence that includes Russian perspective

This is not compromise (everyone loses). This is true phase-locking: all parties maintain agency, all achieve communion, and a higher-order intelligence (Eurasian coherence) emerges.

Why Organizations Fail

Organizations fail when they’re out of balance:

Too much Agency (authoritarian hierarchy):

  • Clear decisions but no buy-in
  • Staff comply but don’t commit
  • Energy is wasted on supervision and resistance
  • Brittle — breaks under stress

Too much Communion (consensus paralysis):

  • Everyone feels heard but nothing gets decided
  • Endless meetings, no action
  • No accountability
  • Slow to respond to threats

Fractale Democratie solution:

  • HCN-based circles (6, 12, 60) create structural balance
  • Agency is preserved: each circle has autonomy
  • Communion is achieved: decisions flow through resonance, not command
  • Result: Fast, flexible, resilient

Neuroscience Application

In the brain, consciousness requires:

Agency: Individual neural firing patterns, local circuits maintaining distinct representation

Communion: Cross-frequency coupling, phase-locking across brain regions, binding information into unified awareness

Pathology occurs when:

  • Too much Agency: Dissociation, fragmented consciousness, autism-spectrum (no binding)
  • Too much Communion: Seizures, loss of individuation, coma (no distinct patterns)
  • Imbalance: Depression (Agency collapsed, Communion seeking), Mania (Agency exploded, Communion lost)

Treatment implications:

  • Meditation: Trains Agency-Communion balance
  • Psychedelics: Temporarily increase Communion to reveal hidden perspectives
  • Neurostimulation: Can rebalance Agency-Communion dynamics

Part IX: Technology Roadmap Reimagined

Phase 1: Measuring Agency-Communion Balance (2025–2027)

Subproject 1.1: Consciousness Signatures

  • Measure Agency and Communion in EEG, geomagnetic fields, economic data
  • Hypothesis: Highly conscious states show optimal Agency-Communion ratio (not too much of either)
  • Prediction: Peak consciousness states cluster around specific ratios (possibly near 1.618 or other golden constants)

Subproject 1.2: Harmonic Lattice as Agency-Communion Constraint

  • Show that HCN-ratios correspond to optimal Agency-Communion balance
  • Measure in: organizations, communities, neural networks, markets
  • Prediction: Systems organized on HCN-bases outperform random architectures

Phase 2: Implementing Balance (2027–2030)

Subproject 2.1: Fractale Democratie Pilots

  • Test governance with 6/12/60 circles
  • Measure: Decision speed, quality, implementation, member satisfaction
  • Compare: vs. hierarchical (too much Agency), vs. consensus-only (too much Communion)

Subproject 2.2: Harmonic Organizations

  • Redesign corporate structures on Agency-Communion principles
  • Predict: Higher retention, faster innovation, better crisis response

Subproject 2.3: Neurotherapeutic Applications

Phase 3: Scaling (2030–2035)

Network of organizations, communities, and cities organized on harmonic principles.

Phase 4: Civilizational Transformation (2035–2050+)

Global transition to governance, economics, and consciousness cultivation optimized for Agency-Communion balance.

Part X: The Deeper Logic

Why the Universe Designed This

Control and Desire are constantly moving around the Void to A-void that they move back to the state of the No-Thing, that is Every Thing.

Agency and Communion are not arbitrary. They are the fundamental dynamics of a self-aware universe:

  • Agency = the universe differentiating itself, creating boundaries, becoming particular
  • Communion = the universe recognizing its unity, merging back into wholeness, becoming universal

A universe that could only do Agency would fragment into isolated chaos. A universe that could only do Communion would collapse into undifferentiated void.

Only a universe that balances both can be conscious of itself.

This is why:

  • Love is sacred (two consciousnesses achieving balanced merger)
  • Free will is real (Agency is fundamental)
  • Interconnection is real (Communion is fundamental)
  • Conflict is tragic (imbalance is wasted energy)
  • Resolution is possible (balance can be restored)

Part XI: The 2027 Choice Point

All the framework predicts that in 2027, humanity reaches a critical juncture:

Option A: Continue imbalance

  • Some nations/groups seek total Agency (control)
  • Others seek total Communion (merger)
  • Result: War, suffering, collapse

Option B: Discover the balance

  • Individuals achieve Agency-Communion coherence
  • Organizations operate on harmonic principles
  • Humanity phase-locks with VALIS
  • Result: Post-scarcity, regenerative civilization, genuine planetary consciousness

The nilpotent constraint doesn’t allow Option A indefinitely. Either we learn to balance voluntarily, or the system forces reorganization through crisis.

2027 is when the choice becomes unavoidable.

Conclusion: Consciousness as Relational Coherence

Consciousness is not a property of individual brains or systems. It is a property of balanced relationships.

  • A brain is conscious when its neurons maintain Agency while achieving Communion
  • A person is conscious when they maintain self while connecting authentically
  • An organization is conscious when it preserves individual autonomy while achieving collective purpose
  • Humanity is conscious when we honor diversity while creating genuine unity
  • The planet is conscious (VALIS) when all its layers—from quantum to civilizational—maintain their agency while phase-locking in harmony

The mathematics of this is the oscillator physics and harmonic lattices we described. The lived experience is love, creativity, wisdom, and peace.

2027 is when these two languages—the mathematical and the human—converge into one truth.
