John Cage: de kunst van het loslaten
John Cage werd gevormd door een opmerkelijke combinatie van invloeden. Van Arnold Schönberg leerde hij dat muziek streng georganiseerd kan worden; van Erik Satie dat muziek niet noodzakelijk naar een climax of betekenisvol eindpunt hoeft te leiden. Maar het was vooral de ontmoeting met Zen en de oosterse filosofie die Cage’s denken fundamenteel veranderde.
Via D.T. Suzuki ontdekte Cage het principe van non-intentie: de kunstenaar hoeft niet voortdurend zijn eigen voorkeur aan de werkelijkheid op te leggen. De I Ching gaf hem vervolgens een praktische methode om beslissingen aan het toeval over te laten. Toeval werd daarmee geen gebrek aan controle, maar een bewuste compositietechniek.
Ook beeldend kunstenaars als Marcel Duchamp en Robert Rauschenberg waren belangrijk. Duchamp liet zien dat de kunstenaar niet noodzakelijk een object hoeft te maken, maar ook de voorwaarden kan scheppen waaronder iets als kunst wordt ervaren. Rauschenbergs witte schilderijen hielpen Cage bovendien begrijpen dat afwezigheid zelf betekenisvol kan worden. Dat inzicht zou uiteindelijk culmineren in 4’33”: een compositie waarin de toevallige geluiden van de omgeving de muziek vormen.
Cage vernietigde daarmee het auteurschap niet.
Hij verplaatste het.
De kunstenaar bepaalt niet langer volledig wat er gebeurt, maar ontwerpt de omstandigheden waarin iets kan gebeuren.
Introduction
Most artists change their style. Cage changed his premises.
His project can be read as one of the most radical experiments in twentieth-century art. He tried to find out whether music could exist without being the expression of a composer’s intentions. Chance, the I Ching, silence, indeterminacy and finally computer-generated procedures were not devices for making music unpredictable. They were devices for altering the function of the composer.
The question was therefore not “how can I compose differently?” It was more fundamental:
How much of the composer can be removed from composition without destroying the possibility of art?
Cage pursued that question for more than forty years. By the end he had built extraordinarily sophisticated systems for generating musical events without determining their outcome. A paradox came with the achievement. The more successfully he removed his personal decisions from the resulting music, the more decisive his decisions became at the level of the system that produced it.
That paradox is the key to both the achievement and its limit. This essay sets out the foundations in the order in which Cage laid them, and follows the paradox as it develops through them.
The foundations were not built at once. They were laid over roughly fifteen years, from 1937 to 1952, and then tested for forty more. Each layer answers a specific question. Each answer constrains the next.
1. The problem he started from
The crisis came in the mid-1940s. Cage had written music meant to be sad. Audiences laughed. He noticed that when he was most precise about what he meant, listeners understood him least. He drew a hard conclusion. If music is communication, then music does not work. He decided to stop composing unless he could find a better reason to continue.
This is an unusual move. The ordinary response to a failed premise is to blame the audience, the performance, or the times. Cage treated the failure as evidence about the premise itself. He then went looking for a replacement.
2. First foundation: the purpose of art is not expression
He found his replacement in two places, both around 1946.
The first was Gita Sarabhai. She was an Indian musician who came to New York to study Western music. She and Cage taught each other, without payment, for about six months. He asked her what music was for in India. Her answer, learned from her own teacher, was that music quiets and sobers the mind, and so makes it receptive to influences beyond the self.
The second was Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. From him Cage took a formula he used for the rest of his life: the artist’s task is to “imitate nature in her manner of operation.”
Note what these two sentences remove.
They remove the artist as the source of content. If the point is to quiet the mind, the artist’s inner life is not the material. It is the obstacle.
They remove imitation of appearance. Nature’s manner of operation is not her look. Cage read the phrase as a description of process. Nature does not repeat, does not develop a theme, does not build to a climax. She produces continuously, without a plan that can be read off the result.
And they replace the criterion. Under the communication premise, a work succeeds if the listener receives what the composer meant. Under Cage’s premise that criterion is unavailable. A work succeeds if attention changes.
Cage was not reporting Indian doctrine faithfully. Scholars who have traced his sources agree that he bent Coomaraswamy considerably. Coomaraswamy was a traditionalist, writing about sacred art made under fixed doctrine. Cage used him to license the opposite: an art with no doctrine at all. His own accounts smooth this over. What matters here is not whether he read his sources correctly, but which premises he adopted and what followed from them.
3. Second foundation: structure must rest on duration
The earliest foundation is also the most technical, and the one most often skipped.
In 1937 Cage wrote a short manifesto, “The Future of Music: Credo.” He predicted that composers would work with noise, with any audible sound, and with electrical instruments. That part is famous. The consequence he drew is more important.
If any sound at all may be used, harmony cannot organise music. Harmony works on pitch relations. Noise has no usable pitch. A rhythmic structure, by contrast, accepts anything, because anything can be given a length.
He tightened the argument in 1948 in “Defense of Satie,” and again in “Experimental Music: Doctrine” of 1955. The reasoning is exact. Sound and silence share exactly one measurable property: duration. Pitch, timbre and loudness belong to sound only; silence has none of them. A structure that must contain both therefore has to be built on duration. Building it on frequency, as the European tradition does, organises only half of the material.
This is a foundational argument in the strict sense. It does not say that duration-based structure sounds better. It says that duration is the only container both terms fit into.
Cage then built it. His percussion works of the late 1930s and 1940s use what he called micro-macrocosmic rhythmic structure. A piece is divided into large sections; each is divided into small ones in the same proportions. First Construction (in Metal) of 1939 runs sixteen units of sixteen bars, grouped 4–3–2–3–4 at both levels. The whole has the shape of its part.
Two consequences follow, and Cage drew both.
The structure is empty. It is a set of measured containers. What goes into them is a separate question. The form does not depend on the material and does not develop from it.
And the structure survives the removal of the composer’s taste. If the shape is fixed in advance by proportion, the contents can later be decided by other means. When Cage adopted chance in 1951 he did not need a new theory of form. The form was already independent of him.
The prepared piano belongs to the same line. From 1940 he placed bolts, screws and rubber between the strings of a grand piano, initially to get a percussion orchestra into one instrument for the dancer Syvilla Fort in a small hall. The result is an instrument whose pitches cannot be inferred from the keyboard. Harmony becomes inoperable at the level of the instrument itself. Sonatas and Interludes (1946–48) is the large work in that idiom, exactly contemporary with the Sarabhai and Coomaraswamy readings.
4. Third foundation: there is no empty space and no empty time
Around 1951 Cage entered an anechoic chamber at Harvard. The room is engineered to absorb reflections. He expected silence. He heard two sounds, one high and one low. The engineer told him the high one was his nervous system and the low one his circulating blood.
Cage retold this for forty years. It functions in his work as an empirical result. His statement of it is flat: “There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time.”
The claim is stronger than it looks. It is not that perfect silence is technically unreachable. It is that silence is not a thing at all. What we call silence is sound we did not intend. The pair sound/silence is not a pair of objective states. It is a distinction between the intended and the rest.
Cage himself later described the lesson in a different register. Silence, he wrote, is a change of mind, a turning around.
That reframing is the hinge of the whole system. Once silence is redefined as unintended sound, the boundary of a musical work stops being physical and becomes a boundary of intention. Everything outside the intention is still there. It was always there. The only thing that ever changed is whether it counts.
Two details are worth keeping, because both are usually lost. First, the chamber was not the cause of 4′33″. Cage had been describing a silent piece since 1948, before the visit. The chamber gave him the argument, not the idea. Second, the argument concerns intention, not acoustics, which is why no improvement in chamber design would affect it.
5. Fourth foundation: questions instead of choices
By 1950 Cage had a purpose that excluded self-expression, and a structure that did not need him to fill it. He still had taste. He still decided which sound went where. He regarded this as the remaining leak.
He is often called a composer of chance music, which misleads if it suggests he wanted random sounds. His concern was not disorder against order. It was intention.
The traditional composer asks: what should happen here? Cage increasingly wanted to ask: what procedure can I set up so that I do not have to decide what happens here? In his own summary, his responsibility became asking questions instead of making choices.
The instrument arrived as a book. In late 1950 or early 1951 the composer Christian Wolff gave him the new two-volume Wilhelm–Baynes translation of the I Ching; Wolff’s father had just published it. Cage was using a magic square to distribute material. He looked at the chart of sixty-four hexagrams at the back of the book and saw that it did the same job better.
Music of Changes (1951) is the first large result. Every parameter is fixed by coin oracle against prepared charts of sounds, durations, dynamics and densities. He did not throw coins and then improvise something suitable. The tables were built first and the answers were followed without exception. The labour was enormous; the score took most of a year.
Henry Cowell then told Cage that he had still not freed himself from his own taste. Cage accepted the criticism and answered it with Imaginary Landscape No. 4 (1951), for twelve radios and twenty-four players. Tuning, volume and tone are all notated. What comes out of the radios is whatever is being broadcast at that moment in that city. The composer cannot know it and cannot influence it.
Here the distinction most listeners collapse must be kept apart. Cage’s chance operations are not randomness in the sense of anything goes. The system is highly determined. What is removed is not structure but the preference of the person asking. Chance was a discipline imposed on the composer, and its value lay in having to accept results he disliked.
And here the paradox appears for the first time. The machine is not neutral. Cage decides which questions to ask, which parameters are subject to chance, what the answers mean musically, and how the result is notated.
He removes choice from the individual musical event by making a choice about the system that generates the event.
He did not abandon composition. He transformed it from the selection of musical objects into the construction of a procedure that produces them.
6. Fifth foundation: chance and indeterminacy are not the same operation
Chance is applied while writing. The score that results is fixed. Cage’s next move was to leave things undetermined in the score itself, so that they are settled only in performance.
He set this out in 1958 at Darmstadt in three lectures, “Composition as Process”: Changes, Indeterminacy, Communication. It is his clearest theoretical writing, and it separates the two operations that his commentators still merge.
Chance concerns how a composition is generated. It singles out one possibility from many. Indeterminacy concerns what happens when the composition is performed.
Suppose chance fixes a note. Once that note stands in the score, the chance operation has ended. If the performer may then decide when, how or whether the note occurs, the performance itself is indeterminate. These are different questions, and a work can have either without the other. Cage said explicitly of Music Walk that it could be indeterminate without any chance operations at all: sheets, transparent overlays and categories of sound, with the performers’ actions settling what occurred. He could not know the outcome until it was played.
The works followed. Music for Piano, where sheet imperfections give note positions. Fontana Mix (1958), where transparencies with points, curves and a grid are superimposed by the performer to produce a score. Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957–58), where every part is separately notated and no conductor coordinates content — a conductor, if present, functions as a clock. The Variations series, which reduces to transparencies and instructions.
The consequence is that the work stops being an object. It becomes a procedure that generates events. Two performances of the same piece may share nothing audible. Both are correct.
Cage’s own image is worth taking seriously. He compared the composer to a woodsman who knows a path because he has walked it, and the listener to someone meeting an unfamiliar plant in the woods. Indeterminate notation puts the performer into the listener’s position. Nobody in the room has walked the path before.
The goal had shifted. It was no longer random composition. It was unforeseeable performance.
7. Sixth foundation: the world can be used as notation
If the composer is not to supply the material, something else must. From 1961 Cage’s answer is that a pre-existing structure in the world can be read as a score, provided the transcription rules are fixed in advance.
The clearest case is astronomical. For Atlas Eclipticalis (1961–62) he laid transparent templates and manuscript paper over the star charts of the Czech astronomer Antonín Bečvář, whose Atlas Eclipticalis 1950.0 had appeared in 1958. Star positions became note positions; which stars were used was settled by chance operations. The surviving manuscripts show the procedure directly, and the New York Public Library’s description of the collection records the method as chance operations combined with transparent templates placed over an astronomical atlas. The score is written as eighty-six independent parts, playable by any number of players. Nobody plays with anybody.
He returned to the method repeatedly, and the titles record which sky he used: Etudes Australes (1974–75) from Bečvář’s southern atlas, acquired in Prague in 1964; Etudes Boreales (1978) from the northern one; the Freeman Etudes for violin (1977–90). In the Etudes Boreales the chart positions no longer give pitch but where on the instrument to play, which turns the piano into percussion.
The same operation appears with other sources. In Ryoanji (1983–85) he traced the outlines of stones, the reference being the fifteen-stone garden in Kyoto, and produced both drawings and glissando notations from the tracings. In Roaratorio (1979) the source is Finnegans Wake: mesostics drawn from the text, plus recordings made in every place the book names. In the Song Books (1970) star charts appear again among many other procedures.
Three things are constant.
The source lies outside the composer and is already structured. He did not invent the sky, the garden or Joyce’s text.
The transcription rule is stated and then obeyed. The rule is the composition.
The result is not a depiction. Atlas Eclipticalis does not sound like the night sky and is not meant to. The sky supplies distribution, not imagery. This is the Coomaraswamy formula applied literally: not nature’s appearance, but her manner of operation.
The method also sharpens the paradox rather than dissolving it. Cage chose the atlas. He chose the pages, the templates, the rule by which spatial information became musical information, the notation, and what performers were permitted to do.
The individual note is no longer Cage’s choice. The universe of possible notes is still Cage’s construction.
8. Seventh foundation: freedom has to be designed
Cage’s experiments then produced a difficulty he had not anticipated. If performers are genuinely free, they may do things he considers musically foolish.
His account of the Concert for Piano and Orchestra is revealing. He surveyed what individual players could do with their instruments, subjected the possibilities to chance operations, and produced parts that were highly indeterminate. Performers then added sounds his notation did not contain. His response was not to celebrate this. He wrote that he had to find a way of letting people be free without their becoming foolish, and asked at once how he would do it.
He found out what the alternative looked like in February 1964, when the New York Philharmonic performed Atlas Eclipticalis under Bernstein. Players mocked the piece, whistled, and damaged the contact microphones. Cage concluded that he had misjudged the social structure of an orchestra. Handing freedom to people who did not ask for it does not produce freedom.
The problem had changed shape. He was no longer only removing his own decisions. He was trying to build a system in which other people could decide without simply replacing his ego with theirs. That is a much harder problem, and it stayed with him to the end.
9. Eighth foundation: the composer as designer of a system
From the 1960s Cage’s works are increasingly systems for organising possibilities rather than arrangements of sounds.
Variations IV (1963) is a good example. Performers use transparent materials and a map of the performance space to determine where actions and sounds may occur. Duration, dynamics and sound content are deliberately left unspecified.
This is not conventional composition. It is a generative system. Cage specifies the rules. The performers realise them. The environment takes part. The result emerges from the interaction.
In current terms he had become a system designer. That does not diminish him. It relocates the authorship.
4′33″ is the extreme case and shows the relocation most sharply. David Tudor gave the premiere in Woodstock, New York, on 29 August 1952, in three movements, marking them by closing and opening the piano lid. Nothing is played. The audience hears the hall, the traffic, the ventilation, the chairs, itself.
The piece is regularly described as a joke or a provocation. Read against the foundations it is neither. It is an experiment with a control. It removes the intended sounds, leaves everything else in place, and establishes that the remainder is not nothing. The result is repeatable, and it has been repeated for seventy years.
Note also that it has a duration. It is not an absence but a measured container, exactly as the rhythmic-structure argument requires.
And here the objection lands with full force. If the sounds belong to the world rather than to Cage, what has Cage composed?
The answer is: the frame of attention. He composed the situation in which ordinary events become audible as music. He no longer needs to compose the sounds. He composes the condition under which sounds will be heard. The composer is less like a novelist writing the events of a story, and more like an architect building a situation in which events can occur.
That is a different conception of authorship. It is not the elimination of intention. It is the transfer of intention from the object level to the system level.
10. Ninth foundation: process, weather, and the return of the object
Late in life Cage described his own trajectory in a mesostic in Composition in Retrospect. He had moved away from structure into process, away from an object with parts, into “what you might call weather.” Then the time brackets took him back from weather to object, and made, in his phrase, an earthquake-proof music.
This is Cage stating his foundations in three terms: structure, process, weather. It is the most compact self-description he left, and it names the tension he never resolved.
The weather image is exact. Weather has no parts. It cannot be divided into movements. It has no beginning that determines an end. It is everywhere at once, different everywhere, and produced by conditions rather than by decisions. In the large indeterminate works of the 1960s and 1970s — the Musicircus events, HPSCHD, the multi-orchestra pieces — Cage tried to make music with those properties.
The last phase reverses part of this. Beginning in 1987 with Two, for flute and piano, he wrote a long series of works whose titles are simply the number of performers: Four, Seven, One⁹, 103. Catalogues count between forty and forty-eight completed pieces. They occupied nearly all of his last five years.
The device is the time bracket. The score gives a fragment, often a single note. Above it stand two time spans, one for starting and one for stopping. The performer may begin anywhere within the first span and end anywhere within the second. In the earlier number pieces the contents came from the I Ching; from 1989 they came from TBrack, a program written by Andrew Culver.
The result is neither conventionally composed nor random. It is a structured field of possibilities. Recent analysis treats the time-bracket system formally as a stochastic process: the notation generates a large collection of possible realisations rather than one fixed performance, and what it fixes is the architecture, not the detail.
Three observations follow.
The number pieces return to duration as the sole organising quantity. That is the 1937 argument, still running fifty years later, with everything else stripped away.
They solve the coordination problem without a coordinator. Each player follows a clock and their own bracket. No conductor, no cueing, no listening-and-adjusting. Coherence is a consequence of shared timing, not of mutual control. After the failure of 1964, this is a considered answer rather than a formal preference.
And they state the final objective. Cage said that his favourite music was the music he had not yet heard, and that he wrote in order to hear music he had not yet heard. He did not want composition to reproduce something already present in his imagination. He wanted it to become a method for encountering what he could not predict. That is more radical than improvisation. The improviser creates from accumulated knowledge, taste and memory. Cage wanted circumstances in which he would meet something his own taste had not selected in advance.
11. The same premises applied to society
Cage did not confine his premises to music. From the 1960s he applied them to the arrangement of society, and the argument transfers cleanly.
The sources are the Diary: How to Improve the World (You’ll Only Make Matters Worse), written in eight parts from 1965 onward; the collections A Year from Monday (1967) and M (1973); the mesostic book Themes & Variations (1982); and Anarchy (1988).
His declared influences are Buckminster Fuller, Marshall McLuhan and Henry David Thoreau. From Fuller he took the claim that scarcity is a design problem rather than a natural fact. From McLuhan, the electronic dissolution of distance. From Thoreau, the refusal of government and the attention to what is at hand.
The structural argument is the one already established in the music. A society organised by a central intention has the same defect as a score organised by a composer’s taste. It requires everyone to be a means to somebody else’s end. His alternative is that of the number pieces: many autonomous parts, minimal shared constraint, coexistence without subordination.
The weakness is also the same, and he knew it. Removing the coordinator does not by itself produce a working whole. The 1964 orchestra proved that. The number pieces work because the shared clock is genuinely shared and the brackets are genuinely honoured. What plays that role in a society he never specified, and mostly declined to invent. He called himself an anarchist and left the engineering open.
The title of the Diary is honest about this. It says that improving the world will only make matters worse. The book is written as a series of interruptions, in changing typefaces, with no argument running through it. The form refuses what the title refuses.
12. Writing under the same rules
Cage applied his procedures to language as thoroughly as to sound. This is the least read part of his work, and the one where the foundations are most visible, because language resists them hardest.
“Lecture on Nothing” and “Lecture on Something,” both from around 1950, are laid out in measured proportional structures, printed in columns, and meant to be read in time like music. They are lectures about their own form.
From the 1960s he wrote mesostics. A mesostic is like an acrostic, but the spine runs down the middle: a chosen name or word supplies letters, and lines are drawn from a source text so that the successive spine letters fall in order. Cage added a rule: between one spine letter and the next, that letter may not appear. This is the hundred-percent mesostic, and it is very restrictive.
The method is a reading procedure, not a writing procedure. The source text is given. The spine is given. What emerges is determined by the two together, plus chance operations to select among candidates. Cage called this writing-through. It is the same operation as the star charts, on different material.
The works are substantial. Empty Words (1974–75) writes through Thoreau’s Journal in four parts that progressively drop syllables, then words, until letters and silences remain. Roaratorio and Writing for the Second Time through Finnegans Wake work on Joyce. I–VI, delivered as the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard in 1988–89, writes through a pool of sources — Wittgenstein, Thoreau, McLuhan, Fuller, the newspaper — under a spine drawn from his own summary of his views. The published book runs past four hundred pages and includes transcripts of the seminars, where he answered questions in ordinary prose.
His stated aim was to demilitarise language. Syntax, in his account, is the army of the sentence: subject commands object. The procedures dismantle the command structure and leave the words present without an order imposed on them.
13. Two supports that are usually misdescribed
Zen. Cage attended D. T. Suzuki’s lectures in New York from the late 1940s into the early 1950s, and the vocabulary is everywhere in his writing. But he did not practise, did not affiliate, and warned explicitly against explaining his music as Zen music. His own description of what he took is narrow and precise: the taste of Zen, for him, consisted of humour, intransigence and detachment. Zen does not teach the use of randomness, and he never claimed it did. What he found there was permission to loosen the grip of preference. He also warned that neither Zen nor Dada is a fixed thing, and that both act differently in different times and places. Reading his work as applied Buddhism gets the direction wrong.
Mushrooms. Cage was a serious amateur mycologist and a founder of the New York Mycological Society in 1962. He collected, identified, cooked and sold mushrooms, and once won a large prize on Italian television answering questions about them. This is usually told as an eccentricity. It is not. Mycology is identification under conditions where being wrong is dangerous and where the specimen does not care about your expectations. It is the one field in which Cage worked with strict correctness criteria that he did not set. He made the connection himself: attending to fungi and attending to sound both require looking at what is there rather than at what you came to find.
14. The paradox: intention relocated, not removed
At this point Cage has achieved something extraordinary without escaping authorship. He has moved it.
Traditional composition: I choose the sound. Cage: I choose the conditions under which the sound can occur.
The difference is profound, and it is not the elimination of intention.
He succeeded in preventing himself from determining many of the sounds. He did not prevent himself from determining the framework within which those sounds could occur. He remained the person who fixed the rules, the questions, the materials, the probability structures, the notation, the permitted actions, the temporal framework, and the line between an acceptable realisation and an unacceptable one.
This is not a criticism imported from outside. His own work demonstrates repeatedly that he saw it. The remark about letting people be free without their becoming foolish is exactly the admission that the framework is his and must be designed.
There is a late interview in which an interviewer proposed that non-intention meant allowing accidents to happen. Cage’s reply was a correction: or the intentions of others.
That qualification changes the reading of the whole project. His mature concept of non-intention was not that nothing determines the event. It was closer to: my intention should not be the only intention determining the event. The work may carry the intentions of performers, the operation of chance, the properties of instruments, the environment, physical accident and other processes. The composer becomes one causal force among several.
He did not need to abolish the composer. He wanted to decentralise the composer. That is arguably what he achieved.
15. What Cage left open
A foundation is judged by what it leaves open. Cage’s leaves four things open. He was aware of all four.
The residue of choice. Chance operations eliminate preference at the point of selection. They do not eliminate it earlier. Cage chose the source, the charts, the questions, the parameters and the moment to stop. His procedures are elaborate filters, and someone designed the filter. He treated this as a matter of degree rather than of kind: the goal was to reduce intention, not to reach zero. No version of his method establishes where the floor lies.
The status of the anechoic result. The chamber story carries heavy load. Acousticians have noted that the room was not perfectly anechoic by later standards and that the two sounds may not be exactly what the engineer said. This does not damage the conclusion, which concerns the impossibility of an empty perceptual field and which anyone can reproduce. It does mean the argument rests on a general fact about perception rather than on a specific measurement.
The gap between production and reception. Cage removed intention from the making. He could not remove intention-seeking from the hearing. Listeners construct meaning from whatever they are given, including from the knowledge that nothing was meant. The frame — a hall, a programme, a title, a lid opened and closed — carries intention even when the contents do not. Every piece relies on that frame. Without it, 4′33″ is not a performance; it is a person sitting still.
The missing transition in the politics. He described a functioning arrangement without a coordinator and built working examples in sound. He never showed how a society moves from here to there, and did not claim to. The late works demonstrate that autonomy plus a shared measure produces coherence. What the shared measure is, outside a concert hall, remains unanswered.
None of these is a refutation. They are the open ends of a programme, and each is a specific question that specific work could address.
16. Conclusion
If Cage’s ambition is read literally as the elimination of authorial intention, he failed. Designing a system is itself an intentional act. A chance machine does not remove the designer. It moves the creative act from the production of individual outcomes to the construction of the space of possible outcomes.
If his objective is read differently — as the destruction of the composer’s monopoly over musical determination — he succeeded to an extraordinary degree. He changed the question from “what music should I create?” to “what conditions can I create in which music can happen without my deciding exactly what it will be?”
The most precise conclusion is neither success nor failure:
Cage made the musical event increasingly independent of the composer. He never made the generative system independent of the composer.
That is the unresolved contradiction at the centre of the work. He wanted to end the composer’s sovereignty. He made the composer less sovereign. He did not make the composer disappear.
The paradox is almost Zen-like. He spent his life building increasingly elaborate methods for getting himself out of the way, and those methods became his most distinctive creation. His greatest composition may not be any particular piece. It may be the invention of a method for composing without knowing what one is going to hear.
What makes this foundational work rather than experimental style is the order of operations. Cage did not begin from a technique and look for a justification. He began from a failed premise, found a replacement, and derived the techniques. He identified an unstated assumption — that music is communication — showed that it was doing damage, and replaced it. He noticed that harmony cannot organise the full material, and replaced it with the one property sound and silence share. He established by a repeatable procedure that the empty case is not empty. He built methods for taking the chooser out of the loop, and then asked what remains when the chooser is out. And he applied the whole apparatus across sound, image, text and social arrangement rather than keeping it as a special theory of music.
That is why the work coheres over sixty years and four media, and why the pieces still function when the polemics around them have gone quiet. The procedures are consequences. The foundations came first.
The composer did not disappear. He became the designer of the possibility of surprise.
Annotated references
The list gives what each source supplies and what it can be used for. Cage’s own writings are the primary evidence; the secondary literature is where dating, method and correction live.

- John Cage, Silence: Lectures and Writings, Wesleyan University Press, 1961; 50th anniversary edition 2011. The core book. Contains “The Future of Music: Credo” (1937), with the argument that noise makes harmony unusable; “Experimental Music” (1957) and “Experimental Music: Doctrine” (1955), which carry the anechoic chamber account and the duration argument in its tightest form; “Lecture on Nothing” and “Lecture on Something” (c. 1950), laid out in proportional time structures; “Composition as Process” (Darmstadt, 1958), the three-part account of chance, indeterminacy and communication, and the source for the distinction in section 6; “45′ for a Speaker”; and material from “Defense of Satie.” If only one source is read, this is it.
- John Cage, “An Autobiographical Statement,” delivered at Southern Methodist University, 17 April 1990; first printed in Southwest Review, 1991. Freely readable on the John Cage Trust site. Short, late and unusually direct. Contains his description of the work as an exploration of non-intention, silence as a change of mind, responsibility as asking questions rather than making choices, the Sarabhai answer, the Coomaraswamy formula, and the late remarks on flexible time brackets and variable structure. The single most quotable primary source for this essay’s argument.
- John Cage, A Year from Monday: New Lectures and Writings, Wesleyan, 1967. The Fuller/McLuhan turn, early parts of the Diary, and the start of the social application.
- John Cage, M: Writings ’67–’72, Wesleyan, 1973, and Empty Words: Writings ’73–’78, Wesleyan, 1979. The mesostic method at full stretch. Empty Words contains the writing-through of Thoreau’s Journal and the progressive removal of syntax, words and syllables.
- John Cage, Themes & Variations, Station Hill Press, 1982. Cage lists fifteen men whose ideas mattered to him and generates mesostics from statements of his own ideas. As a foundations document this is unusually explicit: it is his own source list.
- John Cage, X: Writings ’79–’82, Wesleyan, 1983. Writings around Roaratorio and the later text works.
- John Cage, I–VI, Harvard University Press, 1990. The Charles Eliot Norton Lectures, 1988–89. Over four hundred pages of writing-through, plus transcripts of the question sessions. The transcripts are the readable part and contain many plain-prose statements of position.
- John Cage, Composition in Retrospect, Exact Change, 1993 (written 1981–1990). A mesostic autobiography of his own method, organised on terms such as structure, method, process, discipline, imitation. Contains the passage on moving from structure into process into “weather,” and on the time brackets bringing him back to object. The most compact self-description of his foundations.
- John Cage, Anarchy, Wesleyan, 1988. The political position in mesostic form, built on anarchist source texts.
- John Cage, Diary: How to Improve the World (You’ll Only Make Matters Worse), Siglio Press, 2015; paperback 2019. First complete publication of all eight parts; the paperback adds facsimiles of the unfinished Part IX from the John Cage Trust archive. Written from 1965 onward. The typographic changes are structural, not decorative — they encode chance-determined parameters. Five hours of Cage reading from it, recorded in Switzerland in 1991, are on UbuWeb.
- John Cage and Daniel Charles, For the Birds, Marion Boyars, 1981. Interviews from the 1970s. Cage explaining himself under pressure from a philosopher, which produces sharper formulations than his lectures. A main source for his statements on indeterminacy without chance, and on Music Walk.
- Laura Kuhn (ed.), Musicage: Cage Muses on Words, Art, Music, Wesleyan, 1996. Late interviews conducted by his archivist, covering the number-piece years and the late statements about wanting to hear music he has not yet heard.
- Laura Kuhn (ed.), The Selected Letters of John Cage, Wesleyan, 2016. Correspondence across the whole life. The best source for dating changes of position, since the letters record them as they happen rather than in retrospect.
- Richard Kostelanetz, Conversing with Cage, second edition, Routledge, 2003. Interview material organised by topic rather than date, with sources given for each fragment. The fastest way to locate Cage’s own words on non-intention, on the intentions of others, and on the taste of Zen.

The finding aid and item descriptions document compositional method directly, including the use of transparent templates over an astronomical atlas together with chance operations for Atlas Eclipticalis. This is the archival evidence behind section 7, as distinct from Cage’s own retrospective accounts.
- Antonín Bečvář, Atlas Eclipticalis 1950.0 (1958), Atlas Borealis 1950.0 (1962), Atlas Australis 1950.0 (1964). The Czech astronomer’s star atlases, produced at the Skalnaté Pleso Observatory. Literal source material for four bodies of Cage’s work. Worth inspecting: the atlases use colour to encode spectral class, and Cage’s chance operations selected by colour, so an astronomical classification silently structures the music.
- Richard Wilhelm and Cary F. Baynes (trans.), The I Ching, or Book of Changes, Bollingen Series XIX, Pantheon, 1950. The edition Christian Wolff gave Cage in late 1950 or early 1951. Cage’s use is confined almost entirely to the hexagram-finding chart at the back, as a source of numbers between one and sixty-four. He did not use the oracle for its counsel.
Secondary: method, dating and correction
- James Pritchett, The Music of John Cage, Cambridge University Press, 1993. The standard technical study. Pritchett reconstructs the actual procedures from the sketches: which charts, which questions, which order. Indispensable for checking what Cage did rather than what he said he did, and the main source on the time-bracket system.
- James Pritchett, Laura Kuhn and Charles Hiroshi Garrett, “Cage, John,” Grove Music Online, Oxford University Press. The authoritative reference article and a reliable chronology. Source for Two (1987) as the first number piece and for the flexible bracket system.
- David Nicholls (ed.), The Cambridge Companion to John Cage, Cambridge University Press, 2002. Essays on the writings, the visual art and the reception. Good on what Pritchett leaves aside.
- David Revill, The Roaring Silence: John Cage, A Life, Arcade, 1992; revised 2014. The standard biography. Useful for the sequence of events in 1946–52, when the foundations were laid, and for the 1964 Philharmonic episode.
- Kenneth Silverman, Begin Again: A Biography of John Cage, Knopf, 2010. More archival detail than Revill, particularly on the New York years and the personal cost of the 1950s positions.
- Edward James Crooks, John Cage’s Entanglement with the Ideas of Coomaraswamy, PhD thesis, University of York, 2011. Traces exactly what Cage took from Coomaraswamy and Sarabhai and how far he departed from them. The corrective to Cage’s own smoothed account, and the source for the claim in section 2 that he bent his sources.
- Rob Haskins, Anarchic Societies of Sounds: The Number Pieces of John Cage, VDM, 2009, and the essay “Anarchism and the Everyday.” Connects the late works to the political writings and treats the number pieces as a social model rather than a stylistic phase.
- Alexandre Popoff, “John Cage’s Number Pieces as Stochastic Processes: A Large-Scale Analysis” (arXiv, 2013), and related papers on time-bracket meta-structure. Treats the time bracket as a probability structure and computes what it does and does not constrain. The only quantitative account of the late works, and the formal basis for the claim that the brackets fix architecture while leaving detail free.

- Larry J. Solomon, “The Sounds of Silence: John Cage and 4′33″,” 1998. A widely circulated study of the piece’s genesis. Establishes that the silent-piece idea predates the anechoic chamber visit, which matters for the causal story in section 4.
- The John Cage Trust, johncage.org. The annotated catalogue of works, the autobiographical statement in full, event video, and — most valuable for source-tracing — the complete catalogue of Cage’s personal library, catalogued and annotated in 2017, showing which editions he owned and what he marked. The site also supplies the formulations used in section 9 on 4′33″ and on the impossibility of silence. Correspondence is held at Northwestern University’s music library. Rights and permissions run through the Trust, which asks for two weeks.
Sources Cage himself relied on
- Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, The Transformation of Nature in Art (1934) and The Dance of Shiva (1918). Origin of the formula about imitating nature in her manner of operation. Reading them shows how far Cage moved the phrase from its traditionalist setting.
- D. T. Suzuki, Essays in Zen Buddhism, and the New York lectures of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Cage attended and quoted him for decades without ever claiming to practise.
- Henry David Thoreau, Journal and Walden. Cage’s most-used text source and the origin of much of his political position. Empty Words and Lecture on the Weather are both built on Thoreau.
- R. Buckminster Fuller, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (1969), and Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media (1964). The two contemporaries whose arguments Cage adopted wholesale for the social writings from the mid-1960s onward.
