Abstract

Walter Russell (1871–1963) wrote a body of work that claims to describe the whole of nature from one principle. This essay sets out what he claimed, book by book, in his own terms. It starts with The Universal One (1926), read from the 1974 reprint. It then follows The Russell Genero-Radiative Concept (1930), The Secret of Light (1947) and The Message of the Divine Iliad (1948–49). It ends with the Home Study Course (1950–52), A New Concept of the Universe (1953), Atomic Suicide? (1957) and the late books on world unity. It notes where his terms changed. It then lists how his work was taken up on constable.blog since 2005. A last, short section reads his central structure alongside the Vacuum.Net theory. That section adds a count. It does not replace his terms.

1. The man

Russell was born in Boston in 1871, to parents from Nova Scotia. He left school at nine. He paid his own way through the Massachusetts Normal Art School and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. He became a successful painter and illustrator in New York, and wrote three children’s books before 1905. As a developer he built cooperative studio apartments, among them the Hotel des Artistes on West 67th Street. In the 1930s he spoke for twelve years to IBM staff at the invitation of Thomas J. Watson. From his late fifties he worked as a sculptor, with busts of Edison, Twain and others, and the Four Freedoms monument for Roosevelt. In 1948 he married Daisy Stebbing, who took the name Lao Russell. Together they founded the University of Science and Philosophy at Swannanoa, Virginia, a correspondence school. He died in 1963, on his birthday.

2. The illumination

In May 1921 Russell went through what he described as an illumination lasting 39 days. He later told it in “The Story of My Illumining”, a chapter of the Home Study Course. He wrote that he could perceive all motion during that time, and used Richard Maurice Bucke’s term cosmic consciousness for the state. All his later writing presents itself as a record of what he then saw. He did not build his claims from experiment or from existing theory. He wrote them down as knowledge given, and drew them as charts.

That is the standing of everything that follows. Russell’s claims are the testimony of someone who reports having seen the phenomenon himself.

3. The Universal One (1926)

The first book is the most technical. Its subtitle calls it an exact science of the one visible and invisible universe of Mind. It has two parts, many charts, and ends with a numbered list of some two hundred “new laws and principles”.

3.1 One substance, no creation

There is one substance. Russell calls it thinking Mind, whose body is light. Spirit and matter are not two substances. Matter is light in a state of motion. The elements do not differ in substance, only in their states of motion. Nothing is created from nothing. What man calls creation is the apparent integration of what already exists; its opposite is apparent disintegration. The universe is finite and has no beginning. Nothing in a universe of motion is infinite.

3.2 Two appearances of motion

All motion appears in two forms. Motion-in-opposition is what man calls matter. Pressures are unequal there, held unequal by two opposing forces. Motion-in-inertia is equally electric and magnetic. Pressures are equal. Form disappears into it. Life belongs to the first, what man calls death to the second. Russell writes that there is no death.

3.3 Generation and radiation

Two forces drive the opposition. Generation is attractive, gravitative, positive and electric. It contracts, accumulates, heats and seeks higher pressure. Radiation is repulsive, emanative, negative and magnetic. It expands, dissipates, cools and seeks lower pressure. Each is the cause of the other. Added together they make one force. The energy spent in two opposite swings is always equal; only their dimensions differ. All motion is breathing: generation is inhalation, radiation exhalation.

3.4 The inertial line

Between the two forces lies the inertial line, or plane. It is the line of absolute non-opposition. There the two forces are neutralised and in equilibrium. There is no force behind motion at that line, yet motion crosses it with the impetus it already had. Russell calls this inertial energy. A mechanic, he writes, would call it the dead centre between force and force. The inertial plane is the plane of lowest potential, toward which all masses discharge. It is also the axis along which every wave is born.

3.5 Ten octaves, master-tones and the elements

All motion runs through ten octaves. Each octave has six full tones, one double tone and one master-tone. In the last four octaves mid-tones appear. The so-called physical universe begins in the fourth octave, with hydrogen. Power accumulates to a maximum in the fifth octave and is distributed through the five that follow.

The master-tones are the inert gases. They are in motion-in-inertia and have no valence. Each one records all motion in its octave. Russell removes them from the table of elements, as white has no place in the spectrum although it contains all colours. He calls the Mendeleev table correct only in atomic weight and wrong in every other periodicity. His own chart marks with stars the places of elements not yet discovered.

3.6 The formula of the locked potentials

Every periodicity except mass and tone follows one formula:

4± 3+ 2+ 1+ 0 1− 2− 3− 4±

The zero represents inertial energy. The plus tones are generative, the minus tones radiative. The double tone 4± carries both signs. Russell draws the formula as a cosmic clock. Zero stands at top and bottom. Five octaves wind the clock; five unwind it. The pendulum swings from inertia, through energy, back to inertia.

3.7 The cube of motion

Every wave lives in a cube of motion. Three median planes of inertia divide it into eight equal compartments: four positive and electric, four negative and magnetic. The wave begins at the centre, where the three planes cross, and spirals to the corners. Nothing passes beyond the boundary of its own cube. The inertial planes are barriers into which appearances disappear. Where systems form at the double tone, nuclei are true spheres and crystals true cubes.

3.8 The new laws

The closing list states Russell’s physics as rules. A selection, in his terms:

  • Positive charge attracts positive charge and expels negative discharge.
  • Electricity attracts, magnetism repels.
  • All mass is both electric and magnetic, but preponderantly one or the other in sequence.
  • All mass is potential out of place, constantly seeking its proper pressure zone.
  • Generation of energy comes only through resistance to an established motion; radiation comes through assistance to it.
  • Temperature changes in inverse ratio to volume. Heating bodies charge; cooling bodies discharge.
  • Every pressure develops an equal and opposite pressure. Every plus must be balanced by a minus.
  • Motion appears in mass and disappears in plane. Mass evolves from plane to sphere and back again by way of the cone.
  • No state of motion ever began or ever ended. Nothing is of itself alone.

3.9 Eighteen dimensions and man

Russell treats time, temperature, colour, valence, ionisation, crystallisation, tone and other effects as dimensions of one motion, eighteen in all. The second part turns to man: thinking as the electro-generative action and magneto-radiative reaction of Mind, the soul, regeneration and reincarnation as the return of form.

4. The Russell Genero-Radiative Concept (1930) and the public dispute

The 1930 book restates the cycle of generation and radiation as a theory of continuous motion. In the same years Russell took his claims into the press. In 1930 the New York Times reported his dispute with the findings of Newton and Kepler. In 1931 the New York Evening Post wrote that he was painting the cosmos to prove Newton’s apple a lemon. Russell sent The Universal One to many leading scientists. Science did not take it up.

5. The Secret of Light (1947)

Twenty years later the vocabulary has changed. The still centre is now the still magnetic Light. It is God, absolutely still, invisible, and locatable at countless points. Magnetism is no longer one of the two forces. It is the stillness that centres both.

Motion is the divided light: two opposed electric lights that extend from the still Light. They interchange in sequence and equally. Russell’s central law is now named: rhythmic balanced interchange between all pairs of opposites, in nature and in human relations. It is also the law of love: equal giving and regiving.

One claim in this book matters for everything after it. The two lights interchange to imitate the unity of the still Light. They never reach it, because they can never be more than two. Unity belongs only to the still centre.

Sex is the creative principle: the division of a balanced condition into two unbalanced opposites, which seek to return to balance. Russell also claims that the light we see is not light itself. It is a simulation of the still Light, produced by wave motion. Matter is light condensed by motion.

6. The Message of the Divine Iliad (1948–49) and The Book of Early Whisperings (1949)

The Divine Iliad gives the message of the illumination itself, largely in the voice of the Creator speaking to man. Its subject is Mind, Light, desire and the two-way universe, and man’s knowing of his unity with God. The Book of Early Whisperings gathers short inspired writings from the same source. Both books are written as revelation, not as argument.

7. The Home Study Course (1950–52) and Scientific Answer to Human Relations (1951)

With Lao Russell he wrote a course in Universal Law, Natural Science and Living Philosophy, issued in monthly lessons. It combines the cosmogony with a way of living. It contains the account of his illumination. Its practical claims are those he had made at IBM. Genius is latent in every person. In his best-known line, mediocrity is self-inflicted and genius self-bestowed. Power comes from stillness and concentrated thinking. In human relations the same law holds as in nature. Equal giving and regiving keeps a relation in balance. Taking without regiving destroys it, in a marriage, a business or a nation.

8. A New Concept of the Universe (1953)

This is the most complete statement of the cosmogony. It opens with a list of what Russell calls the basic misconceptions of science. The cardinal error, he writes, is shutting the Creator out of his creation. He rejects the thermodynamic picture of a one-way, running-down universe. In his view the universe is two-way and compensating: every action is repaid by its reaction. He calls Newton’s laws inadequate, Kepler’s first law incomplete, and the earth not a magnet. He holds that every orbit is controlled by four magnetic poles, not two, and that the quantum theory and Coulomb’s law misread the electric universe.

The cube of 1926 returns as the wave field. Each visible sphere is one half of a body. The surrounding cube of space is the other half. The cube is bounded by six planes of zero curvature. No action within a wave field can pass them; it is reflected back. Within the field, curvature is two-way. Matter condenses from the field into the sphere and radiates back out to it. That is the life and death cycle of every form.

The periodic chart is now drawn in nine octaves, not ten. Russell presents it as the key to a coming age of transmutation of elements.

9. Atomic Suicide? (1957) and the late books

The atmospheric tests of atomic bombs led Walter and Lao Russell to write Atomic Suicide?. They claim that radioactivity is the death half of the cycle of matter. In nature it works deep below the surface of the earth, where it breaks down rock. Released above ground and used as a fuel, it reverses the life cycle on the surface. Their conclusion is that using radioactivity as the next world fuel would lead to the extinction of organic life. The book joined Albert Schweitzer’s appeal of 1957 to end nuclear tests.

The World Crisis: Its Explanation and Solution (1958) and The One-World Purpose (1960) apply the law of balance to world politics. Wars come from the taking of what belongs to others. Lasting peace requires a world built on mutual service and the spiritual unity of mankind.

10. How his terms changed

Russell’s claims are consistent in structure and changing in vocabulary. Three shifts matter for any reading.

Magnetism. In 1926 magnetism is the radiative, repelling force, one of the two. From 1947 magnetism is the still Light that centres both, and the two moving forces are both electric.

The still centre. In 1926 it is the inertial line, motion-in-inertia, the zero of the formula. In 1947 it is the still magnetic Light. In 1953 it is the boundary of zero curvature and the centre of every wave field. The position stays the same. Its name rises from mechanics to God.

The octaves. The periodic cycle has ten octaves in 1926 and nine in 1953.

What does not change is the structure. Two opposed motions, equal in sum, interchange around a centre that does not move. Each body is a sphere inside a cube that bounds it. Every cycle returns.

11. Reception

Science did not engage with Russell’s claims in his lifetime. He attributed that to a difference over the existence of Mind behind matter. Admirers credit his 1926 chart with locating elements before their isolation; the chart itself marks such places with stars. A remark of encouragement attributed to Nikola Tesla circulates widely; no source for it has been published. At his death the New York Herald Tribune called him a twentieth-century Da Vinci. The University of Science and Philosophy keeps his books in print.

12. Russell on constable.blog

Russell has been read on constable.blog since 2005. Six texts mark the steps.

“Spirituele Cyclus van Walter Russell” — written 4 October 2005, published 10 December 2019. https://constable.blog/2019/12/10/het-balanceren-van-de-3-krachten-4-10-2005/ A discussion paper for a software company, built on The Universal One. A two-force model of production and consumption receives Russell’s third element: a spring that is not a force. Both forces drive a spiral of seven steps, from craftsman to robot. When the spring breaks, the return to rest is explosive.

“About the Trinity” — 29 December 2008. https://constable.blog/2008/12/29/about-trinity-ternairy-numbers-and-last-judgment/ The trinity in balanced ternary: −1, 0, +1, with the 0 always in the middle. Russell is named among those who drew on the same source.

“About the Vedic Square” — 19 December 2011. https://constable.blog/2011/12/19/about-the-digital-root-part-1/ The digital root and its three triangles, 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9. The 3 is the mover.

“Hoe Geloof ik in een Gezond Lichaam?” — 10 October 2022. https://constable.blog/2022/10/10/cellen-vormen-llchaam/ Russell’s cosmic clock and his octave wave, beside Peter Rowlands’ zero-sum computer.

“Walter Russell’s Light Returns” — 15 November 2025. https://constable.blog/2025/11/15/walter-russell/ Russell’s cube and sphere as a cubic lattice with a cyclic phase.

The Vacuum.Net theory — September 2026. https://constable.blog/2026/09/23/why-vacuum-net-is-a-swarm/ The vacuum as one strand that crosses itself, with three values at each crossing.

13. A short reading alongside the Vacuum.Net theory

This section adds a count to Russell’s structure. It keeps his terms.

In the Vacuum.Net theory each crossing of a strand has one of three values: over (+1), under (−1) or no crossing (0). Three neighbours close when their sum is zero, counted modulo 3. What closes, remains.

Russell’s own formula is already such a register. Plus tones on one side, minus tones on the other, the zero in the middle, which he calls inertial energy. Generation corresponds to +1, radiation to −1, motion-in-inertia to 0.

The Secret of Light says the two lights never reach unity, because they are only two. The count agrees. Of the 9 possible pairs, 3 sum to zero, and those only cancel: Russell’s dead centre. Of the 27 possible triples, 9 close. Of those 9, 7 contain a zero. Without the zero only (+1, +1, +1) and (−1, −1, −1) remain: closure by sameness. The still centre is the third value that lets two different opposites hold together.

Russell’s cube bounded by planes of zero curvature corresponds to the mesh of the net, which admits what fits and returns what does not. His octave, from 0 through 4± back to 0, corresponds to one winding that leaves and returns.

Russell names the source of motion: Mind, the still Light. The net names no source. It has one rule. The two descriptions meet in one structure: two opposed motions, held by a third that does not push.
